Abstract

DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) began to be used as an effective agricultural pesticide in the 1940s to control harmful organisms. However, it has raised serious concerns over time due to its environmental and ecological impacts. The environmental impact of DDT is not limited to target organisms alone but has come to threaten entire ecosystems. Due to its low volatility and high persistence, this compound can remain in the environment for extended periods and accumulate across various ecosystems, including air, water, and soil. Due to the environmental circulation process, DDT travels long distances by air and causes accumulation in water resources and soil. This accumulation leads to biological accumulation in living things by being included in the food chain. While the environmental durability of DDT makes it an effective pesticide, it also causes permanent damage to ecosystems. It also has alarming effects including problems such as reproductive disorders, immune system weakness, and hormonal imbalances in terms of human health. DDT's long-term persistence in water and soil causes permanent damage to ecosystems, and these negative effects have led to the restriction of its use in agriculture. This situation needs the development of alternative pesticides. Environmental monitoring programs and ecotoxicology studies play a vital role in better understanding and managing DDT, whose permanent effects continue even when its use is restricted. It is essential to adopt an integrated approach to protect ecosystems and ensure human health.
