Abstract

Space inefficiency, energy wastage, and ineffective resource management are common issues in educational facilities because of fixed infrastructure and traditional facility management practices. This situation makes operational expenses and environmental concerns more severe for educational institutions. This research seeks to examine the contribution of smart building solutions in facilitating sustainability in educational settings based on the improvement of energy efficiency, resources optimization, and flexible space use. The methodology used in the research is a systematic literature review of publications written between 2020 and 2026. Specific attention was given to the role of Internet of Things technologies in occupancy tracking, intelligent scheduling systems, smart HVAC management, and flexible design. The results of the study reveal that smart occupancy systems helped to attain occupancy accuracy levels ranging from 80% to 97%. Intelligent scheduling increased classroom occupancy efficiency from 30% to 50%. Moreover, smart HVAC and lighting management enabled reductions in energy waste ranging from 15% to 25% in certain campus buildings.
